These things are ferocious. I was privileged to be around the lion's cage when it was being fed. It's keeper tried to get it roar without success. All the lion did was to growl and that alone caused the ground to vibrate.
It is said that the roar of the lion is generated from its belly and can be heard 8km (5miles) away. I also understand that, unlike the cow and other mammals, the bones in the limbs of the lion do not have marrow. By this I mean it is solid all through with no hollow at its centre. This adds to its great strength.
